THE PERVERTS (A COMPROMISE)

The primary component of this work is the large tunnel piece in the center of the space. Viewers are invited to enter the tunnel by crawling on their hands and knees. After rounding the first corner they are presented with an opening on one wall of the tunnel, a vent. Upon looking through the vent the viewer will find themselves looking in upon a simulated domestic environment of two people, a man and a woman, interacting. The interaction of the two people may lead one to believe they have a romantic relationship, but no overt romantic act is ever performed by either person. The viewer continues down the length of the tunnel and, after turning another corner, exits. On exiting they encounter a video monitor mounted to the back of the tunnel showing a live security camera feed from inside the tunnel, revealing that as they observed the couple through the vent, they too were observed by other people present in the space.

The title of this work, The Perverts, asks the viewer to decide to whom the label applies: To the people in the video, to the person in the tunnel watching the video, to the people outside observing the person within, or perhaps to the artist, for being the one to devise this whole scenario in the first place.

This work is subtitled A Compromise as the video in the tunnel was originally meant to be performed by two pornographic actors meant to act out a scenario similar to the one presented. The production company hired to produce this video was not able to deliver by the time the video was needed, so an approximation of the intended video was made using the video game The Sims 3. Materials related to the uncompleted video are available to the public on two clip boards hung near the rear of the tunnel, one bearing e-mail correspondence with the production company, the other with head shots of the pornographic actors and the set that was intended to be used in the filming of the video.
